| Why Can't I Change? |
 |
|
By Pastor Kirby Jones
It seems our society has an unquenchable appetite
for ways of changing who we are. The airwaves are
filled with infomercials that promise to help us in that
pursuit. They promise to do everything from helping
us lose weight, to improving our cat’s self-esteem.
Unfortunately, most of the gurus that promise to
improve our lives are nothing more than sophisticated
snake oil salesman. They claim to have the cure for
all our ills in their little bottle of magic elixir. The reality
is that once we have purchased their products, we
only find ourselves with less money, and the proud
owners of another box of junk. The whole experience
becomes another frustrating and empty attempt at
doing something to improve our status and change
the person we are.
The Holy Bible and our own personal experience
teach that only God can truly change a person.
Neither a new hairstyle nor a narrower waist will do
anything to affect the real person inside.
In the book of Genesis there is a wonderful example
of God working in the life of an individual that was not
much different from most of us. Jacob was a man,
who for all his life had simply been a hustler and a
pretender. From early childhood (even his name
means trickster), Jacob made it a habit to do whatever
he had to do to “get over”. That was just the kind of life
he lived. But God had another plan for Jacob. Please
take the opportunity to read along in Genesis 32:24-
28, as we can see the ingredients for real change in
someone’s life.
- Attention given to God alone (v. 24). Often when
God wants to do something in us, he will isolate us
(and he has many ways of doing that) so we can
concentrate solely on him.
- God’s initiative to make a change in us. He
actively wrestles against our will, and against our sin
nature (v. 24) to make us Christ-like.
- A point of brokenness, where it becomes
exhausting and even painful to continue resisting
God’s will (v. 25).
- The acknowledgement of the sinfulness that is in
us (v. 27).
- The miraculous inner-cleansing that can only
come through the Holy Spirit changing the very nature
of who we are (v. 28).
Jesus Christ offers to all of us the power to overcome
every habit, every addiction and every sin in our lives.
He wants to change us even more than we want to
change ourselves. Today, give yourself totally over to
him, and see the difference that he will make!

A Word from Bonnie |

Another school year is coming to a close. It has been
a very rewarding year in so many ways. Thank you to
all the parents, students, friends and family that have
supported Want Music Ministry during the 2006-2007
school years. Students always remember that you
have gifts and talents that are inherent in you from
God. Use the gifts and the talent of playing piano to
serve others, as good managers of the varied grace of
God. 1 Peter 4: 10.

Forming the Habit of Bible Study
All Scripture is inspired by God and is
profitable for
teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for
training in
righteousness, so that the man of God may be
complete, equipped for every good work. 2
