5 Tips for When You Don’t Feel Like Practicing

By: Mike Marinaro

Let's face it...sometimes you just don't feel like practicing even though you know you should. Here are a few things that I do when I just don't feel like practicing.

1. Listen to Your Favorite Artist. When you hear the music you really like to listen to it will get you back in the mood to play again.

2. Play. Stop practicing and just play. Put on a CD and play along with it, or just play the music that your like; have fun with your music...that's what it's all about!

3. Take a Break. Just walk away from it. Do something else that has nothing to do with music for a while. Soon you will find that you are in the mood to get back at it again.

4. Set Goals. Give yourself something to aim for. Set practice goals. Maybe learning one new song per week or practicing for an hour a day. Don't set your goals too high, you want to be able to achieve them. You will feel a sense of accomplishment as you reach each new goal.

5. Find a Practice Partner. Having a friend to practice with will challenge and motivate you to practice more.

I went several years without ever picking up my guitar then one day someone at church found out I used to play the guitar and asked me to play a song with him at Sunday Service. It was great to play again and now we have formed a Praise Band at our church and play every week at service. We practice together on Thursday nights and challenge each other to bring in new songs each week to learn.
