To the Pastor, Officials and Members,

There is a known disparity between America's youth, and other industrialized nations in the disciplines of math and science; that divide becomes even wider in the case of minority and economically disadvantaged children.  Consider these facts:
*Although end-of-grade tests scores have risen for most groups in math since 2005, a gap of almost 30 percentage points exist between white and black students, and a gap of nearly 20 points exists between white students and their Hispanic peers.
*High-quality after school and summer programs benefit at-risk students academically and socially.
*High poverty districts in our state (N.C.) – those that actually need more money to reach high achievement goals – have begun receiving less.  In 1999, high-poverty districts received $337 more per student than districts serving more affluent families, but by 2005, these same districts received an average of $603 less per student than lower-poverty districts.  By 2005, per pupil funding in low-minority districts was $663 higher than in high-minority districts.*

The Daniel Center for Math and Science will open its doors in the summer/fall of 2010.  The purpose of the Daniel Center is to provide improved math, science, and technology education opportunities that narrow the education disparity for at-risk and economically disadvantaged students.  Furthermore, to prepare and motivate young people to pursue a post-high school education through proven tutoring methods within the framework of safe, effective and fun childcare programs.

The Center is organized under the Non-profit Corporation Act of North Carolina, and will operated exclusively for charitable and educational purposes in a manner consistent with Chapter 55A of the General Statutes of North Carolina and Section 501 (c)(3) or successor provisions of the Internal Revenue Code.

In order to undertake this great project, we need YOU.  We need you to pass the word about the Daniel Center to your family, friends and acquaintances.  We also need donations to make this great vision a reality.  Please make a tax-deductible monetary donation to this cause.  Checks or money orders may be written to The Daniel Center, and mailed to 735 Rock Quarry Road, Raleigh, NC.  You may use this letter as your official, tax-deductible receipt for your gift.  We believe that education coupled with the uniqueness of each person’s DNA given by the Creator is the right combination to complete success.  Help us help our community, our city, our state and our nation during this season.   For more information, please call (919) 255-8957, or (919) 427-5826.

Sincerely,
Bonnie Perry, Marketing
